Step 2: Measure the Mantle Bowl Assembly (The 10% Rule)
Don't trust the gauge. I don't care what the seller says about "40% liner life remaining." You need to see it. Crawl into the bowl (make sure it's safe first) and measure the remaining thickness at the feed opening and the discharge setting area.
The Check: If the remaining wear material is less than 10% of the original new part thickness, budget for new liners now. For an HP300, a new set of liners can cost $3,000 - $5,000. That's not a negotiation point—that's a hidden cost. Use a caliper, not your eyes. The tungsten carbide in the manganese can look thicker than it is.
Step 3: Inspect the Main Frame & Adjustment Ring Cracks
This is where experience matters. A hairline crack in the main frame on a GP series unit is a deal-breaker for me. It's repairable, but the cost ($4,000-$8,000 for a proper weld and stress relief) usually kills any financial upside.
The Check: Use a dye penetrant test or a magnetic particle inspection on the load-bearing surfaces. Look specifically at:
- The base of the main shaft hub
- The adjustment ring threads (this is a huge failure point)
- The corners of the feed opening on the frame

Running a short-throw machine on a coarse application will choke the crusher. I've seen it happen. It's not a warranty issue—it's a specification mismatch.
Step 6: Get a Written Warranty on the Main Shaft & Bearings (Even if it's 90 Days)
This is non-negotiable for me now. I know it's a used unit. I'm not expecting a 12-month warranty. But if the seller won't stand behind the main shaft or the bearings for even 90 days, that tells you something. Those are the most expensive parts to replace.
The Check: Ask specifically: "Can you provide a limited warranty covering the main shaft, the eccentric bushing, and the bearings for 90 days from the date of first crushing? Excluding wear items?" Final Thoughts: The Cost of Skipping Steps
