Nordberg HP vs GP Cone Crushers: A Buyer's Honest Comparison
When I tell people I buy crushing equipment for a living, they usually nod like they get it. Then they ask one question: "So which cone crusher is better—Nordberg HP or GP?"

Round 1: Application Fit
Everything I'd read before I took this job said the HP is the one for hard rock. Full stop. The GP is "versatile." What I've learned on the ground is a bit more nuanced.
From the outside, the GP looks like a cheaper HP. The reality is they're built on different design philosophies. HP crushers use a smaller stroke plus higher crushing force per move, which is why they chew through granite, basalt, and quartzite. GP units use a steeper angle and a more forgiving chamber that handles a wider range of feed types and product requirements.
Here's the part that surprised me: on our limestone site, the GP300 outperformed the HP300 on product shape at similar throughput. The conventional wisdom says the flagship must win everywhere. In practice, for medium-hard rock, the GP gave us cleaner shapes and lower fuel per ton. If you're crushing limestone or dolomite and nothing harder, you're paying for crushing force you don't need when you buy HP.
Round 2: Sticker Price vs. Cost Per Ton
When I first started managing these purchases, I assumed the cheapest quote was the smart buy. Three budget revisions and one very awkward finance meeting later, I learned that the price on the quote is almost never the price that matters.
Upfront, the GP is noticeably cheaper. From the quotes I've seen over the last two years—and I may be misremembering the exact percentages—a GP300 typically lands about 15-20% below a comparable HP300 with equal options. If you compare invoices only, GP wins.
But the number that should drive the decision is cost per ton. On hard rock, the HP's higher efficiency means more finished product per unit of energy and less oversize recirculating through the circuit. That's real money. On our granite site, the HP earned back its premium in a little over a year through fewer re-crush cycles and lower recirculation.
On the softer limestone site? The GP is the cheaper buy, and the HP's extra power sat unused.
The "budget" option is the premium choice for soft rock, and the "premium" option is the budget choice for hard rock. Anyone who tells you one always wins hasn't run your numbers.
Round 3: Wear Parts and Getting Them In a Hurry
Let's talk about the part of the job nobody puts in the brochure: bowl liners, mantles, and the invoice trail behind them.
Both series wear manganese liners that you'll replace regularly. The HP's chamber geometry tends to use slightly pricier liners with more manganese per set because the crushing zone is working harder. The GP's liners are simpler and, in my experience, last fine in softer conditions. If I remember correctly, our GP site went through about three liner sets a year and the HP site about two—but the HP liners cost more per set. It roughly evened out.
Availability is where the gap shows. The HP series has a massive installed base—literally thousands of units running worldwide—so standard HP liners and spares are usually stocked at regional distributors. GP parts are common too, but I once had a GP mantle flown in from another region with a 10-day lead time. If your site is remote, check your local distributor's stock before you commit to a series.
Round 4: Automation, Where the Gap Is Widest
I used to think crusher automation was a fancy add-on salespeople used to justify their price. Then we installed Metso's IC automation on the HP300 at a granite site, and I had to admit I was wrong.
Automation adjusts the closed-side setting in real time based on load, so the crusher runs closer to its limit more of the time. We saw utilization jump by an amount that paid for the package inside the first season.

So Which One Should You Buy?

Choose the HP series if:
- Your feed is hard or highly abrasive—granite, basalt, trap rock. Hard rock is where HP earns its premium.
- You want automated, hands-off optimization across multiple shifts.
- You're chasing the lowest cost per ton at high throughput, not the lowest purchase price.
Choose the GP series if:
- Your material is medium-hard—limestone, dolomite, gravel. The GP will do the job for way less capital.
- You've got a solid operator crew and don't want to pay for automation you'll ignore.
- Upfront budget matters more than long-term per-ton cost.
Looking back, I should have pushed for the automation package on the HP site from day one instead of waiting for a pilot. At the time it felt like an optional extra. The utilization reports said otherwise.
One last thing from the buyer's seat: whichever series you choose, don't chase the lowest quote blindly. We once took a cheaper liner supplier—great price, but they couldn't provide proper invoicing, finance rejected the expense report, and the "savings" vanished into a four-hour argument. Verify the vendor, source the parts properly, and let cost per ton, not sticker price, make the call.
Take it from someone who's ordered both and has the receipts: the right answer is never "HP is better" or "GP is better." The right answer is, "it depends on the rock, the site, and the far-right column of the cost analysis."
