I work in quality control for a mid-size aggregates producer. Our site runs a mix of older Nordberg crushers and newer Metso machines, and I review roughly 200 crusher-related order lines each month. Over the past four years, I've sent back about 7% of first deliveries—mostly for missing paperwork or profile mismatches. If you're buying Nordberg parts, here's the checklist I'd start with.
1. Is the Nordberg brand still supported?
Yes, and that's more than a nostalgic statement. The old Nordberg Manufacturing Company no longer operates as a standalone business, but the engineering data behind the brand is still in active use. Metso lists original spare parts for Nordberg-designed HP, GP, MP and legacy Symons cone crushers under its parts program. According to Metso's parts catalog (metso.com, accessed April 2025), genuine parts are available for these machines and are made to the latest revision of the original drawing.
The revision point matters. A part made from a 30-year-old drawing is not the same part a modern OEM catalog lists. There have been alloy tweaks, seal updates, and dimensional corrections. If a supplier tells you the Nordberg brand “doesn't exist anymore,” that's often a way to avoid explaining which revision they used.
2. How do I know a “Nordberg-compatible” part is actually to spec?
The label means nothing. I ask for four things: the original Nordberg/Metso part number being cross-referenced, the drawing revision, the tolerances on the machined seating area, and a material certificate tied to a heat number. If the supplier replies with only “same as OEM,” the part is still an approximation.
In 2024, we ordered liners that matched the cross-reference list but had a measured feed opening 6 mm wider than the OEM profile. The supplier called it “within casting tolerance.” We rejected it because casting tolerance is not the same as a drawing tolerance. The crusher chamber is designed around dimensions, not around the word “compatible.”
3. Does genuine always beat aftermarket?
No. I've seen excellent aftermarket foundries make parts that perform as well as original Nordberg/Metso parts. I've also seen cheap castings that looked perfect in photos and created problems in operation. “Aftermarket” is a category, not a quality rating.
What changes my decision is risk. On a primary crusher where downtime stops the whole plant, I'm more likely to buy OEM because I get traceability, engineering updates, and one accountable party. On a secondary machine with decent stock levels, a carefully sourced aftermarket liner can be a sensible choice. I've gone back and forth on that decision more than once. The right answer changes with application, lead time, and your own inspection program.
4. What should I physically check when liners arrive?
Check the seat first. Before I worry about chemistry, I put the liner on the head or bowl adaptor and check contact. If it rocks or doesn't seat evenly, the rest of the material certificate doesn't matter.
Then I check feed opening and wall thickness at several points. When I compared two mantle sets for the same HP200 application side by side, the feed openings differed by 4 mm. One chamber was just slightly tighter. That sounds small, but it changed throughput and product shape on that machine.
I also check hardness separately from chemistry. A heat number tells you what was poured; hardness tells you whether heat treatment actually worked. I'm not a metallurgist, but I don't need to be to ask for actual Rockwell values from that batch.
5. What was the most costly quality issue you caught before installation?
In March 2024, we received 24 mantles with the same heat number and a signed certificate. The first article inspected fine. The thirteenth had an out-of-round bore about 0.8 mm beyond tolerance. When we set it on the head, it rocked. Under load, that kind of clearance creates movement and can damage the head or mainshaft. We rejected the whole lot and requested per-piece inspection reports before we accepted a replacement.
Nobody wants to think one drawing value can cause a five-figure repair, but it can.
6. What paperwork should I keep with every Nordberg order?
Keep enough to rebuild the story of that part. Material certificate with heat number, hardness test results, dimensional/first-article report, original part number, drawing revision, batch number, and your receiving inspection notes. Store it under the machine serial number, not in a folder called “supplier quotes.”
When a wear part fails or when a buyer asks about a used machine, that file is what separates “trust me” from “here is the evidence.” We scan everything before the part goes to the warehouse.
7. How do I compare price fairly?
Use cost per ton, not the purchase price. Track tons crushed per liner set. If a part costs 25% less but lasts 35% less time, it is more expensive per ton—and you still carry the downtime risk. If it costs 20% less and wears at the same rate, it might be the better business decision for your site.
The key is data. We record the date installed, tons run, hours run, and reason for removal for every liner set. That data is more useful than any brochure, and it's the only way to judge a “Nordberg-compatible” part honestly. Whichever option you choose, buy something you can prove.
8. Do I need the crusher serial number to order parts?
Yes, and a good supplier will ask for it. The model name alone—HP300, GP200, MP1000—doesn't tell you which chamber configuration or engineering change was installed on that specific machine. The serial number helps confirm the latest drawing and any service upgrades.
I also ask for the application: coarse crushing, fine crushing, hard rock, or gravel. Two Nordberg crushers with the same model can run very different liner profiles, and ordering the wrong one is not a quality issue—it's an expensive paperwork mistake.
