Nordberg Parts: Genuine or Aftermarket? What 6 Years of Procurement Data Shows
I manage parts procurement for a 90-person aggregate company in the Pacific Northwest. We run a Nordberg HP200 cone crusher, a GP300 secondary unit, and a C106 jaw on the primary side. My annual wear parts budget sits at about $380,000. The question I get from peers at other sites is nearly always the same: 'Should I buy genuine Nordberg parts or go aftermarket?'
After six years of tracking actual data, my honest answer is: it depends — but not the way you'd expect. Most people frame this as a price question. I've learned to frame it as a cost-per-hour question, with failure risk as the tiebreaker. Everything below comes from the numbers in our system, not from marketing material.
First, the Comparison Framework
Any A/B comparison has to be scored on criteria that actually predict results. I use four, and they're worth stating before we dig into data:
Price. The invoice amount for the part, quoted to our spec.
Wear life. The number of operating hours until the liner reaches its change point, measured on our feed.
Failure risk. The total cost of an unplanned shutdown if the part doesn't hold up.
Support. What the supplier does when something goes wrong — plus the logistics of getting a replacement.
Looking only at price is exactly how we lost money in year one. You'll see why in a minute.
Dimension 1: Purchase Price — Aftermarket Wins, No Contest
This is the one dimension where aftermarket suppliers dominate the conversation. For a complete HP200 mantle and concave set, genuine Nordberg parts come in around $14,000. The aftermarket quotes we received in Q4 2024 ranged from $9,500 to $11,000. Simple math: that's 21 to 32% less on the purchase order.
On a quarterly change-out cycle, the difference is significant. If your job is managing a budget, these quotes get your attention. And that's exactly how the low-priced vendor hooks you.
Dimension 2: Wear Life — Where the Tables Turn
Purchase price only matters if the part delivers comparable life in the crusher. Ours didn't, on average. We measure liner thickness biweekly and record every change-out in hours. Across the last four years on the HP200, genuine Nordberg liner sets averaged about 1,140 working hours. The best aftermarket set we tested — from a foundry out of the Upper Midwest with strong customer references — hit 980 hours. The cheapest aftermarket set, the one that won the beauty contest, reached only 640 hours.
Run the numbers on cost per operating hour and the picture changes dramatically:
Genuine Nordberg: $14,000 ÷ 1,140 hours = $12.28 per hour.
Best aftermarket: $10,500 ÷ 980 hours = $10.71 per hour.
Cheapest aftermarket: $9,500 ÷ 640 hours = $14.84 per hour.
The cheapest part on the purchase order was the most expensive liner we ever ran. That's not a rhetorical trick. It's division.
But here's the part I don't like to say to OEM sales reps: the best aftermarket set beat the genuine parts on cost per hour. They earned it with solid metallurgy and consistent dimensions. So the blanket statement that 'genuine is always cheaper' is false. What the genuine part gave us instead was predictability — the same 1,100+ hour performance, set after set. Aftermarket performance varied between batches, which forces you to plan for the worst case. In an environment where downtime is scheduled weeks in advance, that uncertainty has a real cost.
One thing to know if you're starting down this path: crusher wear parts are austenitic manganese steel castings, typically 12–18% manganese depending on the application. ASTM A128 is the common industry reference for the material grade, and credible aftermarket vendors should supply a certificate showing chemistry and hardness. In our experience, though, the certificate doesn't predict performance. Dimensional accuracy and internal soundness — neither visible on a spec sheet — decided the outcome more than the alloy chemistry did.
There was also a downstream quality difference. At the same closed side setting, the aftermarket liners that wore unevenly generated flakier product and pushed our recirculating load up by about 8%. We didn't connect that to the liners at first, but the gradation data aligned with every change-out. That's another hidden cost that never shows up on the invoice.
Dimension 3: Downtime Risk — The Expensive Lesson
In my first year on the job, I made just about every rookie procurement mistake on the list, and the most expensive was choosing the cheapest liner set on the market. The quote came in about 35% below genuine. My controller was happy. For three weeks.
The concave cracked at roughly 15% wear and shifted out of position. We caught it before it damaged the main frame, which qualifies as pure luck. The crusher was down for four days.
Here's the actual bill from our cost tracking system:

- Fitters' overtime and repair labor: $6,200

Since then, our procurement policy requires a TCO calculation and a minimum of three quotes for every liner set. The policy exists because I got burned, not because an OEM salesperson convinced me of anything.
Dimension 4: Support, Fit, and Fine Print
Honestly, if wear life were the only factor, this article would be done already. But the softer costs matter too.
Fit. Genuine Nordberg liners go on without modification. Every aftermarket set we tested needed some grinding or shimming at installation. That's two to three hours of a fitter's time for each set — plus the stress of improvisation during a tight maintenance window.
Technical support. When our GP300 started recirculating more fines than it should, a Metso representative came out, measured the chamber profile, and traced it to a feed distribution issue. That visit improved circuit efficiency at no cost. I've never had an aftermarket foundry offer that kind of help.
Warranty. The aftermarket vendor from my first-year failure blamed the ore, then the installation, and then stopped answering the phone. That's not a line item in the TCO spreadsheet, but it's real. Genuine parts are backed by a company with distribution in every mining region — if a metallurgical defect shows up, the replacement is theirs, not yours.
Logistics. We get genuine Nordberg parts on a weekly delivery through the local Metso distribution channel. That makes planning simple. Some aftermarket suppliers were quick on the first order and much slower on repeat orders — apparently the warehouse only stocked the initial batch. Budget for six weeks of lead time if you go that route.
And watch the fine print on aftermarket quotes. One quote didn't include the countershaft bushing. Another listed 'standard freight' from a depot 900 kilometers away. Check every line item.
Which One Should You Buy?
Here's a decision framework that has survived contact with real budgeting:
Genuine Nordberg parts are the right call when the crusher is a production bottleneck, the rock is abrasive, or the part is structural. If a failure stops the plant, a $4,500 saving on a liner set means nothing against the cost of an unplanned stop. We also keep genuine parts on anything that carries load — main shaft, head, bowl assembly, countershaft. Those are not places for experiments.
Aftermarket makes sense when the crusher is a standby or low-utilization unit, when you're willing to run a structured trial, and when the supplier has documented references from similar rock types. We found one aftermarket foundry we trust for GP300 liners, and we still re-test the first set each year as a sanity check.
If you go the trial route, here's the protocol we use: buy one set only. Measure liner thickness weekly, track power draw, record hours, and compare product gradation against the previous genuine liner. If cost per hour doesn't beat the genuine baseline after at least 500 hours, don't reorder. That's it. Simple.
And if you're in the market for a used Nordberg crusher — HP200s show up on the resale market pretty often — factor the liner condition into the deal price. A crusher with genuine parts and documented usage is worth more than the same unit wearing cheap unknown liners. We've seen both.
The Bottom Line
It took me three years and roughly 150 orders to fully understand the difference between 'cheap on paper' and 'cheap in operation.' The number on the invoice is not the number that drives profit. Cost per hour is. And the cost of a failure is in a league of its own.
People think the decision is between an expensive part and a cheap part. It's not. It's between a known cost and an unknown one.
Crusher parts are not a place to be a hero. Buy what the data says, measure what the data shows, and don't let a low quote be your only source of truth.
