Ordering Nordberg Crusher Parts? A Scenario-Based Guide to Getting It Right
Before you ask whether to buy genuine Nordberg parts or aftermarket — stop. That's the wrong first question.
I've been handling parts and service orders for Nordberg crushers for six years. In that time, I've personally made 11 significant mistakes. Maybe 10, I'd have to pull the log. Either way, they add up to roughly $48,000 in wasted budget — reorders, rush freight, and downtime that snowballed into missed delivery dates. Now I maintain a checklist for our team, and everything below comes from that journey.
The thing I didn't understand early is that this business has no universal answer. The right call depends on which crusher you're feeding, what you're crushing, and how fast you actually need the part. Anyone who hands you a single rule — "always OEM" or "aftermarket is fine" — probably hasn't paid the bill twice.
In my experience, most parts problems fall into four situations. Find yours.
Scenario 1: You're Keeping a Legacy Crusher Alive
If you're running a Nordberg Symons 4¼ or 5½, an Omnicone, or anything older than your plant manager — this is for you. The Nordberg design lineage goes deep. The company got its start in Milwaukee back in 1886 when Bruno Nordberg founded it, and by 1926 the machines carrying the Nordberg name were already respected across the crushing industry. Some of those machines are still chewing rock today.
That legacy is a double-edged sword. It means parts are available. It also means someone's probably been inside that crusher before you — and they may not have done the job cleanly.
In 2019, I ordered a new mantle for a 1969-era Symons cone. The part number matched. The catalog drawing matched. We pulled the old liner and dropped the new one in. It wobbled. A quarter inch of play.
Someone during a past rebuild had re-machined the seating area to correct a wear issue, and the dimension was off from the original spec. I hadn't measured anything. I'd trusted a 50-year-old brochure. Freight down the drain, a reorder, and a 3-day shutdown later, I learned the rule: on any machine with decades of service history, measure the actual seating surfaces before you order. Don't just quote the serial number.
And if the crusher's been rebuilt, ask one question: was the mantle seating area or bowl re-machined? That conversation takes two minutes. It can save you a week of downtime.
Scenario 2: You're Ordering Wear Liners for an HP or GP Series
Modern HP and GP series crushers look forgiving. You quote a part number, check the price, move on. That's exactly where I got burned.
In 2022, I ordered a mantle and concave for an HP300 crushing river gravel with high quartz content. Same part number we'd always used. I checked the PO, approved it, and told myself it was just like the last one. It wore out in three weeks. We'd been getting twelve.
The surprise wasn't the price. It was my own ignorance about metallurgy. Standard manganese steel doesn't perform the same on every rock. For highly abrasive, quartz-bearing feed, you need a work-hardening manganese formulation. Same shape. Completely different steel.
The lesson clicked when we compared two liners side by side — same crusher, same chamber, one standard alloy, one high-manganese spec. The premium liner cost 15% more and lasted roughly four times longer. I ran that math ten times. It didn't get any harder to accept.
So before you order a liner, know your rock. Know the abrasiveness, the feed size, the closed-side setting. Any supplier that can't tell you the alloy chemistry and why it fits your particular feed is quoting you a lump of steel, not a solution.
Scenario 3: OEM vs. Aftermarket
This is the question everyone actually asks. I've bought both. I've been burned by both.
The OEM premium is real. Genuine Nordberg parts — supplied through Metso's distributor network — typically run 30-45% more than the lowest aftermarket quote. What I mean is, on a $3,200 liner order, that premium is maybe $900. It feels like a tax on caution.
But the surprise wasn't the sticker price. It was the hidden value on the OEM side. When a genuine part failed in our operation, the distributor sent an engineer, inspected the crusher, confirmed the failure mode, and coordinated a warranty replacement without a fight. Meanwhile, an aftermarket failure on another order cost us $8,900 in lost production plus the reorder — and the supplier's "warranty" involved three weeks of emails and a partial refund.
Does that mean aftermarket is always the wrong answer? No. At least, not in my experience. We now source the simple, low-risk parts — bowl clamps, feed hoppers, fasteners — competitively, and it saves us real money. The risk scales with criticality. If a wear part fails and the whole circuit goes down, cheap was never cheap. If the part is non-critical, shop that quote.
One rule I never bend: demand traceability. Material certificates, heat numbers, country of origin. If a supplier hesitates on documentation, you already have your answer.
Scenario 4: The Breakdown
This is where all logic goes out the window. The machine is down, production is bleeding, and a supplier swears they can deliver in five days when the OEM says six weeks.
In September 2022, we lost a GP-series crusher. OEM lead time: six weeks. An aftermarket supplier promised ten days. I approved a rush premium on a Friday afternoon. Four days later, the tracking still showed nothing — because the part wasn't in their warehouse. It still had to be poured at a foundry. We waited three weeks, then ordered the genuine part by air freight anyway.
$14,000 spent. Zero uptime gained.
Now, in a breakdown, I slow down for ten minutes and run a different checklist. First, is the OEM part physically available in a distribution center near you? Get it in writing, with a location. Second, is the aftermarket part actually on a shelf, not just "in the system"? Ask for a photo. I'm serious. A picture of the physical part against a serial number stops a whole category of lies. Third, what is one day of downtime really costing you? If it's $5,000, then a $4,000 freight bill is rational only if the part genuinely ships tomorrow. Not "eventually."
Rush freight on crusher components has run us 25-100% above standard LTL rates on recent quotes (2023-2024, typical carrier pricing; verify current rates). That's a heavy tax. Make sure it's buying a part that exists.
Which Scenario Are You In?

- Machine older than 30 years, rebuilt more than once, or unknown service history? Scenario 1. Measure first, buy second.
- Buying liners and unsure about your feed's abrasiveness or your crusher's closed-side setting? Scenario 2. Alloy before price, always.
- Comparing quotes on a critical component where failure stops the plant? Scenario 3. Price the failure, then look at the invoice.
- Crusher already down and someone's promising impossibly fast delivery? Scenario 4. Verify physical stock, then rush.
If you're in a situation that fits none of these, slow down. Take the part number. Take a photo of the crusher's nameplate. Measure the working surfaces. I've been at this for years, and I'm still only as good as my last checklist.
A quick historical footnote: Bruno Nordberg, the Finnish-born founder, led the company until his death in the early 1920s — just before the Symons cone design made his name a global standard in crushing. By 1926, the company he left behind was already a machinery powerhouse in Milwaukee. Millions of tons of rock have passed through crushers carrying his name. That's the kind of legacy that doesn't need an obituary section.
