The Nordberg Parts Mistake That Changed How I Order
I've been handling crusher parts and service orders for 11 years. That doesn't make me an engineer. It makes me the person who signs the purchase orders and then has to explain to a site manager why the part on the pallet is not the part we needed.
I've personally made and documented seven significant mistakes, totaling roughly $34,000 in wasted budget. This article is not a lecture. It's my own failure notes.
Here is what I believe: most Nordberg parts problems are not caused by bad parts. They are caused by people like me approving orders without checking the details that actually matter.
The First Mistake: I Trusted the Price Difference
In my first year doing this, 2017, I made the classic specification error. I needed a mantle and bowl liner for an HP200 cone crusher. The OEM quote was around $4,600 for the set. The alternative supplier was $2,800. I checked the part numbers, compared the dimensions, and told myself it was the same thing.
It was not the same thing.
The parts bolted on. That was the good news. After about 130 hours of crushing granite with high quartz content, the wear pattern was noticeably uneven. The closed side setting drifted. Recirculating load jumped from 18% to 24%, and the site manager wanted to know why the plant kept slowing down. The aftermarket liner wore out about 30% faster than the OEM liner I had used before. The $1,800 saving disappeared, and then I had to pay for a second changeout.
That was the first time I ran the arithmetic on total cost per ton. It hurt.
Honestly, I do not blame the vendor in most cases. I blame my own approval process.
The Recurring Problem: Dimensions Look Fine Until They Are Not
The most frustrating part is that this keeps happening in different shapes. I once ordered replacement side plates for a Nordberg VHS-1 vibrating screen. The aftermarket drawing matched the original. I approved it based on part number and saved about $600. When it arrived, the cross-member spacing was 40 mm off. Not enough to make it unusable, but enough to require cutting, re-drilling, and a few colorful conversations with the workshop.
What did that $600 saving actually cost? About $1,100 in fabrication labor, two days of delay, and a part I now do not fully trust. The order process was the problem, not the supplier. I did not ask for the serial number. I did not ask for installation drawings. I did not ask about tolerances. I asked for a match to a worn part that should have been measured before removal.
After the third similar issue, in September 2022, I created our pre-order checklist. That is the real reason I'm writing this.
OEM vs. Aftermarket: The Honest Answer
If you want a one-word answer, you'll be disappointed. I still buy aftermarket parts for a bunch of things: screen media, chute liners, conveyor idlers, bolts, guards. For those, the risk of failure is low and the replacement is cheap.
I do not buy aftermarket mainframe components, eccentrics, bowl liners, mantle and concave sets, or anything that holds the crusher chamber together. Not because the aftermarket parts are always bad. Because when they fail, the cost of the failure is not the part price. It's a week of downtime and possibly a damaged crusher.
I'm not saying every aftermarket part is dangerous. Some aftermarket shops do excellent reverse-engineering. If you know the supplier, can verify the metallurgy, and the part is not safety-critical, it might be a sensible buy. The problem starts when we treat all parts as interchangeable commodities. They are not.
I also check the original Nordberg drawings first. Metso still publishes dimensional drawings for current models, and older Nordberg manuals are available from dealers. I use them before every order. It takes ten minutes and it's saved us more than once.
The 'Same Words, Different Meaning' Problem
A lot of ordering mistakes sound simpler than they are. I said 'as soon as possible' on a rush order; the supplier heard 'whenever it's ready.' That's on me. On another order, I described the part as 'standard' and the supplier sent something from stock that looked right. We didn't discover the issue until we checked the serial number.
Then there is the rush order trap. A customer's maintenance window was 48 hours. I had maybe 3 hours to decide. I went with a vendor who could deliver overnight, but I skipped the drawing check. In hindsight, I should have asked for a photo of the actual part before it shipped. It arrived, it was close, but it was not right. We made it work with shims, but I don't recommend that approach.
Now I put everything in writing: deadlines, dimensions, grade, serial numbers. I don't trust 'standard' anymore. That word has cost me more than any part price.
What I Check Now (So You Don't Learn the Hard Way)
Here is the 10-minute process I use now. Now I maintain our team's checklist, and it's caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months.
- Write down the machine serial number, the old part number, and the supplier's cross-reference number. If the cross-reference does not exactly match the OEM number, ask why.
- Get the original installation drawing or dimension sheet. Check not just the bolt holes, but the critical clearances and angles.
- Confirm the material grade and hardness range in writing. For manganese wear parts, that means the manganese content and hardness target, not just 'good quality.'
- If the old part is still in the crusher, measure the worn geometry and compare it with the new part before you agree to install it.
- Ask the supplier what happens if the part does not fit. If they won't put it in writing, treat that as a red flag.
But Is OEM Always Worth It?
I can already hear the same argument I used to make: 'OEM is overpriced.' Yes, the upfront price is higher. I do not use OEM for every consumable. If I need a quick replacement for a non-structural wear liner, aftermarket is fine. The issue is not the label. The issue is the consequence of being wrong.
Take this with a grain of salt, but in my experience, the best procurement question is not 'which price is lower?' It's 'if this part fails, what does the next hour cost?' On a 300-ton-per-hour plant, an hour of lost production can be several thousand dollars in lost margin. A bad part that only shaves 2 hours off your week pays for the difference.
And if you are ordering something like the VHS-1 screen part I mentioned, the same logic applies. The cost of a wrong cross-member spacing is not the part. It's the fabricator's invoice and the delay.
Bottom Line
I still believe in buying based on engineering risk, not brand loyalty. But I no longer treat 'aftermarket' and 'OEM' as the real question. The real question is: have I verified the part number, serial number, dimensions, material, and failure cost before ordering?
